Recuerdos de Toluca Cyanotype Series

a book exploring the complex history of colorism in Mexico.
Recuerdos de Toluca is a cyanotype series that explores portraiture through Mexican identity and family history. Western portraiture rarely reflects and often exclude the experiences of Hispanic and Latinx folks. In response, the nopal becomes both symbol and structure, carrying my family’s presence as an image of resilience and survival.Archival photographs are layered over the nopal which allows the faces and histories to emerge. By merging personal imagery with cultural iconography, Recuerdos challenges traditional portrait conventions, presenting a visual language where legacy is preserved and reimagined.
